Tiny and quiet Switzerland, early 21st century: rumbling bass seeps
out of thousands of fallout shelters deep under the Alps, where producers
patiently craft hits waiting to happen. When Dave The Hustler finally
sticks his head out into the sun, his first single went directly into
the dance charts to become an underground hit.
Yet Dave didn’t just pop out of nowhere. drummer in a handful
of shady new wave & punk funk outfits since the age of 14, he eventually
hooked up in the late 80’s with his engineer/producer pal Clive Jenkins aka Evil C, with whom
he made the transition to the new electronic sounds that signalled a musical
revolution in the making.
With their first release “Hackin’ The Disco-tech”,
Evil C and The Hustler formed Paparazzi Records in 1998, and Dave’s
sound took shape: vintage keys and big samples backed with tough beats
for the dance floors he was DJing to in Paris, Barcelona, Zurich or London.
Paparazzi published a series of 12” by the duo before signing a
variety of other artists, among which was The Hacker, who remixed Dave’s
“Club Honey” track while at the peak of his successful duo
with Miss Kittin. Living in Geneva at the time, Kittin recorded a remix
with the Hustler on Germany’s respected Disko B Records.
Fast forward to 2000, when Chicago's Felix The Housecat came to town
and magic happened. The combo produced and recorded several key tracks
for Felix’s award-winning Kittenz and Thee Glitz album: “Silver
Screen (Shower Scene)”, “What Does It Feel Like?”, "Madame
Hollywood" - which have grown to become cult classics.
The Housecat & Hustler alliance continues with their “Rude
Photo” production team collaborations on Felix's Devin Dazzle and
The Neon Fever full-length on Emperor Norton Records ("Let Your Mind
Be Your Bed", "Neon Human", "Watching Cars Go By")
as well as tracks on Sean "Diddy" Combs forthcoming dance
project "Divided Soul". First single with Diddy,
“Jack U”, is already an underground classic, dropped by the
likes of 2 Many DJs and Tiga. Remixes by Hell and Felix & Dave to be released November 2005.
Dave and Felix’s work together under the Rude moniker also
includes their remixes of Mylo’s “Drop The Pressure”,
Iggy Pop & Peaches “Motor Inn” and Ozzy & Kelly Osbourne’s
“Changes.”
Other releases in
the past include : shuffling electro-rock sing-along “Her Dream”
featuring Cassy Britton (on Switzerland’s pioneer underground label,
Mental Groove) with remixes by David Carretta and Patrick Pulsinger as
well as Crowdpleaser’s “Crash Kiss” (Viking).
Currently between Europe and Southern California producing tracks for the Virgin Tears debut album, Dave is also completing work on his collaboration with Detroit Grand Pubahs : Filth n' Dirt. Expect white labels on both projects early 2006 and full releases May 2006.
